WINTHROP’S CANCER CENTER FOR KIDS RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION FROM JAY’S WORLD CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION, INC.

Ralph and Mary Ann Napolitano (second from left, right) founders of Jay’s World Childhood Cancer Foundation Inc., present a generous donation to Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Winthrop and Director of the CCFK, and Linda Sweeney, Pediatric Development Manager for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop.
The holidays were extra special at Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) thanks to the generosity of Jay’s World Childhood Cancer Foundation Inc. The Foundation, established in 1994 by Ralph and Mary Ann Napolitano to celebrate their son Jason’s (“Jay”) successful leukemia treatment, is committed to children and their fight against pediatric cancer. Their latest gift of $10,000, earmarked for CCFK programs and services, underscores a partnership that has enriched programs and services and helped provide advanced technology in the CCFK and the construction of the Jay’s World Cancer Unit in Winthrop’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center, thanks to their donations totaling nearly $600,000 to date.

“Countless patients and families at the Cancer Center for Kids have benefitted from the generosity of Jay’s World Childhood Cancer Foundation Inc.,” said Linda Sweeney, Pediatric Development Manager for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop. “The Napolitano’s longstanding support is deeply valued by both the Hospital and all those who have been fortunate recipients of the family’s benevolence.”

In 2004, Jay’s World Childhood Cancer Foundation funded Winthrop’s 15,000 sq. ft. Jay’s World Children’s Cancer Unit in the Hospital’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center – a pediatric oncology unit specially dedicated to caring for children with cancer. The Unit consists of five uniquely appointed rooms with sophisticated air filtration systems, sleeping accommodations for parents and other family-focused amenities. The Foundation also underwrote the complete blood count (CBC) Laboratory and the Practice Manager’s office at the CCFK’s expanded outpatient facility, along with a state-of-the-art Blood Lab Machine, laptop computers, essential medical equipment and scholarships for children who have or have had cancer and are planning to attend college.

Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids is the largest outpatient facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders in Nassau County, providing superior medical treatment in a caring and nurturing environment. For more information about the CCFK, visit www.winthrop.org/cck.
