Global Medicine Elective
Since 2013, our program has proudly offered a bi-annual two-week Global Medicine elective. Residents have had the opportunity to travel to El Salvador to work in a wide variety of settings: from rounding with the residents in the local children’s hospitals to teaching pediatric emergency medicine and resuscitation to rural doctors, in addition to dental hygiene and hand hygiene education at local schools.
Our elective is unique from those of other programs in that it is 100% resident-driven. The residents, who are currently on the elective, decide on their trip itinerary based on what feel they passionate about as a group. The attendings serve as a system of support and guidance.
Our efforts in El Salvador have inspired some pediatric residents and attendings to start their own non-profit organization called RIGME, Inc. (Resident Driven Global Medicine Education, Incorporated). You can find out more information at: www.rigme.org.
We have travelled to El Salvador three times as an official elective and look forward to expanding to other locations in the future.
