Exploratory in nature, basic science research is often driven by curiosity and conducted without a practical endpoint in mind, although it can have unforeseen benefits with practical applications.
Understanding the changes in cells and molecules associated with illnesses provides the fundamental knowledge that eventually leads to new ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent a wide variety of ailments. Basic research does not necessarily produce results that are immediately relevant for medical care, but the knowledge gained often is essential for progress in the various steps involved in new discoveries and new treatments.
