Weight Management for All Ages
Winthrop’s Comprehensive Weight Management Program provides programs for adults, adolescents, and children. By offering specialized services and support, we are able to provide the highest level of care for our patients.
Group sessions for children, teens and parents are offered over 10 weekly sessions. Before starting the group sessions, the family is evaluated by a pediatric endocrinologist to screen for complications of obesity. Medical clearance to attend the program and perform physical exercise is required along with a consent signed by a parent. Parent participation in the program is mandatory. Before and after participation, the youngster receives nutritional assessments from a registered dietitian.
Gaming activities and effective weight management techniques, including nutritional guidance, exercise and behavior modification strategies create a communal and supportive "learning-is-fun" environment that provides a forum for participants to manage their weight and build healthier lives.
Individual Sessions are presented in 12-weekly one hour segments These meetings offer the same combination of nutritional guidance, exercise and behavior modification strategies as the group sessions.
Follow-up Sessions are offered for a full year following participation in either group or individual sessions.
Winthrop-University Hospital and Adelphi University have developed a weight management program to help overweight teens achieve healthy lifestyles. The Comprehensive Health Assessment for Nutrition, Growth, and Exercise (CHANGE) Program is focused on physical exercise, nutrition and behavioral modification specifically for teens, ages 13-18.
How It Works
The CHANGE Program consists of a 12 week session. Each week, teens attend 2 one-hour group sessions at Adelphi University where you are guided through different exercise routines. There are two group nutrition meetings after two different exercise sessions during the course of the 12 weeks.
In order to build group support, siblings and friends are not allowed at the sessions.
Upon registering, and before the first session, teens are evaluated by one of the CHANGE Program’s physicians. Clearance for physical exercise will be given by one of our Pediatric Cardiologists.
