Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Treatments at Winthrop-University Hospital Cardiovascular Center
A National Leader in Cardiac Care
Cardiac Surgical Treatments
Over nearly two decades, the Winthrop-University Hospital's cardiac surgery program has been repeatedly ranked among the top three in New York State by the Department of Health, with a risk-adjusted mortality rate for isolated coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG) significantly lower than that of other hospitals in the state. This has been achieved by means of meticulous, round-the-clock, ongoing care provided by an exceptionally cohesive team of experts that includes Board Certified cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiovascular nurse specialists, cardiac nurse practitioners, clinical cardiac perfusionists and cardiac surgical physician assistants.
With surgical proficiency and extensive knowledge of medicine, they are unrelenting in their pursuit of top performance and meeting the unyielding standards set by the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (TCV) Department's leadership. Always diligent, the team focuses on each patient throughout every phase of the cardiac surgery experience, and provides the following services:
- Open-heart coronary artery bypass surgery
- Heart valve repair and replacement
- Transmyocardial revascularization for treatment of angina
- Beating heart surgery/off-pump
- Maze procedures for treatment of atrial fibrillation
- Minimally invasive surgery
- Endoscopic vein harvesting
- Treatment of aortic disease at the Center for Aortic Diseases
Center for Aortic Diseases
Winthrop's growing Center for Aortic Diseases is staffed with a skilled and experienced multidisciplinary team of thoracic and cardiovascular experts who work closely with interventional radiologists to provide screening and state-of-the-art conventional and endovascular treatment for patients with diseases of the ascending aorta and aortic arch, as well as the descending and abdominal portions of the aorta.
At the forefront of the specialty, Winthrop was recently included in a select group of hospitals to receive FDA permission to perform thoracic aortic stent grafts in patients with thoracic aortic aneurysms. This promising new, minimally invasive, catheter-based approach to the repair of aneurysms - an X-ray guided technique - is considered safe and effective in carefully selected patients and has a lower morbidity than conventional surgery.
