Welcome to Parent Education at Winthrop!
Includes a 90-minute power-point presentation and question/answer period are led by a Registered Nurse and Pediatrician once a month Tuesday 7-9 PM.
The �Welcome to Winthrop!� Orientation provides necessary information about the New Life Center, admitting process, labor and delivery, visiting hours and discharges. This program does not include a physical tour. Classes are held at Winthrop University Hospital Spatz Conference Center (Winthrop-University Hospital - Lower Level).
Preparing for Childbirth Class - Fee: $ 175 per couple
This program, with its focus on natural childbirth (Lamaze), gives the mother to be and her coach the opportunity to learn about the birthing experience. Included are discussions on pain options and Caesarian sections. The program is offered in three evening sessions on Monday nights, or a single Sunday class.
Monday classes are from 7:00 � 9:00 pm
Sunday classes run from 11:00 am - 6:00 pm (lunch break)
Please note that hospital tours are included within program and are made by appointment only. Hospital tours consist of a half hour physical tour of the New Life Center, including the Laboring and Delivery Suites only. This can be arranged through Parent Education at 516-663-2858.
Tours are administered on Thursday evenings.
Breastfeeding Class - Fee: $30 per person, $50 per couple
This two-hour class which is led by a Certified Lactation Consultant discusses the advantages of breast milk, and provides participants with practical information and strategies for successful breastfeeding. Positioning, latch-on, pumping, how to tell if the infant received enough to eat and maternal nutrition are all discussed.
Breastfeeding Support Group - Fee: No Charge
Infant Care Class - Fee: $30 per person, $50 per couple
This two hour class provides instruction and discussion on infant bathing, dressing, feeding and safety. Attending this class before delivery eases the transition into parenthood by making new parents feel more confident with their newborns. Grandparents are also invited to attend.
Classes are offered three times a month on a Wednesday evening from 7:00 � 9:00pm, or single session on a Sunday at 1:00pm.
Sibling Preparation Class: - Fee: $20 per child
�Big Brother and Big Sister Day Camp�
This one-hour class is taught by a Child Life Specialist and is appropriate for children ages 3 � 7 years. The class facilitates positive self-esteem and gives children practical ways to help out at home with the new baby.
Accompanied by one parent or caregiver, and a favorite doll or stuffed animal, the children are given a brief tour of the maternity unit and nursery. A snack is provided, as is a certificate that designates the child as a future �Big Brother� or �Big Sister.� We request that only one adult attend the program.
This program runs twice a month on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 � 3:00pm. Classes are held in the Maternal Child Classroom in the hospital.
American Heart Association Family & Friends CPR - Fee: $50 per person, $90 per couple
This three-hour course includes CPR and choking relief for Adults, Children and Infants. Classes are usually held in the evenings as well as on Saturdays.
Infant CPR Anytime Program - Fee: $55 per person, $80 per couple (one kit)
A one-hour class, learn infant CPR and Choking relief using your own personal American Heart Association CPR learning kit during and instructor lead class. The kit includes a personal, inflatable MiniBaby� CPR learning manikin, CPR Skills Practice DVD, fold-out Quick Reference Skills Reminders, Sanitizing wipes, Mini baby spare lung and a practice phone, can be taken home to share with family and friends.
Music � Mommy and Baby - Fee: $200
Keri Worth, Music Together trained singer and song writer. Your little musician will come alive with song and dance. Different genre of music will be introduced � from rock to classical�Mom and baby will learn to play instruments, dance and song-write together. This is a 10 week series for moms and ages 0-3 years.
Pre-natal Yoga - Fee: $120
An eight-week series teaching relaxing exercise in gentle yoga postures will increase flexibility, strength, circulation, balance and the mind-body-spirit connection. Certified yoga instructors will guide mom in a safe and supportive manner through movements and techniques to support their pregnancy. Class is recommended for 2nd and 3rd trimester. (Please bring personal yoga mat).

Registration by your fifth month of pregnancy is recommended.
