Brief Resume

Dr. Ragolia received his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Stony Brook University in 1985 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Queens College of the City University of New York in 1994. He joined Winthrop in 1995 to study type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. After five years, 17 publications, several book chapters and a grant from the American Heart Association, he was offered the position of Director of Cellular Biology in 2000. Over the next three years he received grants from the National Institutes of Health to study insulin’s effect on smooth muscle contraction; the American Heart Association to study the effects of prostaglandins on vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, migration and apoptosis; and the American Diabetes Association to study the effects of prostaglandins in type 2 Diabetes, for which he was the recipient of the prestigious Thomas R. Lee Award. In 2003, he was appointed Director of the Vascular Biology Institute and asked to oversee all basic science research in the Department of Medicine. Since 2008, Dr. Ragolia has also assumed the title of Director of Applied Sciences Research at Winthrop where he manages the basic science interests in the Department of Obstetrics /Gynecology as well. Dr. Ragolia sits on several committees at Winthrop including the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the Radiation Safety Committee and is the Winthrop representative at the Long Island Life Science Initiative and the Academy for Medical Development and Collaboration’ Core Director and Proteomics group. He has over 40 publications in highly respected peer-reviewed journals as well as several review articles and patents. Dr. Ragolia holds the academic title of Associate Professor from Stony Brook University School of Medicine.
