Clinical Research

Clinical research refers to studies carried out on people. It typically involves patients with specific medical conditions but often these studies evaluate people without any medical illness as a way to understand what causes disease. Clinical research includes epidemiological and behavioral studies, and outcomes and health-services investigations. Many clinical research studies evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment of medical illness. These types of clinical research studies are commonly called clinical trials.

Experienced clinical research coordinators, research pharmacists, laboratory personnel and ancillary staff have pioneered a host of important patient-oriented clinical trials, focusing on asthma, diabetes, hereditary angioedema, high cholesterol and metabolic syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatitis, pulmonary hypertension, Crohn’s disease, osteoporosis and host of other illnesses.

Winthrop researchers have also been engaging in translational research, integrating state-of-the-art clinical medicine with basic biomedical research in a bi-directional manner.
Winthrop scientists are investigating a class of drugs that inhibit the restoration of bone, and are also seeking to find the link between Vitamin D and osteoporosis prevention in adolescents.
