Pastoral Care and Spiritual Services
At NYU Winthrop Hospital, we offer a number of religious, spiritual and chaplaincy services to patients and families during their time of need.
Located in the heart of the Hospital around the corner from the Lobby, is the Serenity Chapel. The Chapel is a beautiful space open daily from 5:30 am until 10:00 pm for personal prayer, meditation, and observing silence. Throughout the year, members of the spiritual care team lead special services and religious observances for Hospital staff, families and visitors. Patients are welcome to visit the Chapel for public worship, with the permission of their physician and the nursing staff on their unit. Religious services can also be viewed on Channel 83 from televisions on the medical units. For a schedule of prayer and worship services: Schedule of Weekly Prayer and Worship Services.
Sacred texts, such as the Bible, Jewish siddur, and Muslim Koran are available in Serenity Chapel for patients to borrow; often there is an ample supply for patients and visitors to keep. A selection of religious literature and items, such as daily devotionals (also in Spanish), rosary beads, prayer cards, medallions, Sabbath candles, and Muslim sajajid (prayer rugs), are available in Serenity Chapel. To request any of these items, ask the nurse to make a referral to the Pastoral Care Department at 516-663-4749.
If you have religious dietary needs, such as Kosher or Halal, please inform the nurse who will make a referral to the Dietary Department on your behalf.
How to support the Peace and Hope Chaplaincy Program
The Hospital offers opportunities to be a significant named benefactor to perpetually honor a loved one on our ‘Wall of Remembrance,’ or to simply express gratitude for the spiritual services you or your loved one may have received. To make a contribution, please complete our Serenity Chapel gift form.
Bereavement Support Groups and Special Topic Seminars
Support groups and seasonal seminars are offered for those who are grieving the death of a loved one. The groups provide a safe, supportive, nurturing environment for participants to express their emotions and thoughts — or sit in silence — with the goal of moving toward healing and wellness. The seminars are offered throughout the calendar year to address specific topics that arise from discussions in the support groups. For more information or to register for a group or seminar, please call 516-663-4749, or email us.
Shabbat provisions are made available for Observant family members and visitors throughout the Hospital. The Sabbath House, located off-site near the Hospital, is provided to accommodate family members in special circumstances. Reservations are required to lodge overnight at the Sabbath House and can be made through the Patient Relations Office on the 1st Floor of the Hospital.
There exists a diversity of beliefs and values throughout the NYU Winthrop Hospital system and in the neighboring communities. During the year, there is an observance of sacred time and traditions for someone, somewhere.
Please note that Jewish and Muslim holidays start at sunset the day before the date listed and continue until sunset of the next day. Also, due to Islam’s use of the lunar calendar, some dates will be confirmed closer to the holiday.
