Excellence in healthcare delivery begins with expert hospital governance. Winthrop-University Hospital further strengthened its leadership and oversight through the appointment of three new Board Members. Each brings a unique perspective of the healthcare industry, attained through many years of experience and success in business, finance, management, education, and community service.
Charles L. Ruoff, CPCU
Elected to Winthrop's Board of Directors, Charles L. Ruoff, CPCU (Garden City) is currently Senior Vice President with Acordia, Inc., a large insurance
brokerage and consulting firm based in Indianapolis, Indiana. Prior to joining Acordia, Mr. Ruoff was President of the Commercial Accounts Division of American International Group in New York, having retired from Sedgwick, Inc., a U.K. based global broker, where he spent 18 years in various executive management positions.
Mr. Ruoff has more than 30 years of brokering and underwriting experience with major national and global organizations. He has written and lectured extensively on business insurance topics, in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia.
Mr. Ruoff holds a BS in Accounting from St. Peter's College, an MBA from the College of Insurance, an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Molloy College, and has completed the executive management program at Oxford University in the U.K.
Stephen Rushmore -
Hotel Industry Executive
Stephen Rushmore, CRE, MAI, CHA, (Roslyn Heights) follows a proud family tradition of service
to Winthrop. His father, Leon A. Rushmore, Jr., served on Winthrop's Board and is an Honorary Hospital Director.
As President, Founder, and Director of the worldwide operations of HVS International, a global hospitality consulting organization with offices in Mineola, New York; San Francisco; Miami; Boulder, Colorado; Vancouver; and London, Mr. Rushmore has considerable expertise in what Win-throp terms "Hospital Support Services" - dietary, housekeeping, laundry, safety, security, and patient amenities. Winthrop-University Hospital - a "hotel of healing" - is currently involved in enhancing all its patient services, to increase patient satisfaction while achieving greater efficiencies. Drawing on his vast experience, knowledge, and business acumen in the hospitality industry, Mr. Rushmore will help to guide Winthrop in tailoring its support services to the needs of its patients.
During a successful career of more than 30 years, Mr. Rushmore has provided consultation services for more than 5,000 hotels in all 50 states and in more than 55 foreign countries. Moreover, he has taught hundreds of classes and seminars on hotel trends to more than 20,000 industry professionals, and is an adjunct professor at New York University and a faculty member of the Cornell University School of Hotel Management, where he earned a BS degree. He also holds an MBA from SUNY, Buffalo; CRE from the Counselors of Real Estate; MAI from the Appraisal Institute; and is a CHA - Certified Hotel Administrator - earned through
the American Hotel and Motel Association.
Michael Schamroth
Michael Schamroth (Hewlett Bay Park), the owner of M. Schamroth & Sons in Manhattan, has been elected to Winthrop's Board of Directors, bringing comprehensive, first hand experience in healthcare administration through his role as Chair-man of the Board of South Nassau Communities Hospital, Oceanside, New York; Chairman of SNCH's Community Medicine Committee; and President of the SNCH Council.
With the formation of the Winthrop South Nassau University Health System, Mr. Schamroth was named Co-Chairman of the Board of the combined entity. (Alfred H. Hicks, Chairman of Winthrop's Board of Directors, is also Co- Chairman.)
His previous roles as Deputy Mayor and Police Commissioner for the Village of Hewlett Bay Park, and his current membership on the Village's Board of Zoning Appeals, encompass broad knowledge of public administration and village government.
Mr. Schamroth is a graduate of Miami University, Ohio.
