On October 20, 2012, the front lawn of Bayville UCP in Bayville, NY, was the
site of the 10th anniversary of “Bay’s Big Bash: A Celebration of Life.” The proceeds
from this now legendary event, which celebrates the life and survivorship of
Bailey Ryan and the pediatric patients at the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at
Winthrop-University Hospital, benefit the CCFK – Nassau County’s largest outpatient
facility treating children with cancer and blood disorders.
The Bayville community, energized by a network of volunteers, supported the
Ryan/Lovegrove families in their efforts to create an Oktoberfest-themed festival
which featured a wide variety of traditional German foods like Wurstl (sausage)
and Brezeln (pretzels), along with an oompah band, raffle prizes, silent auction
items and children’s games and activities courtesy of Gooseberry Grove.
“The people of Bayville and Bailey’s family put a lot of love and hard work
into this wonderful day,” said CCFK Pediatric Development Manager Linda
Sweeney. “By transforming the park into a fair ground, they’re helping to empower
our kids in their fight against this terrible disease.”
From hayrides to pumpkin picking and a country store that sold pies and candied
apples, this Oktoberfest raised more than $31,000 for the Center’s psychosocial
programs. These services are essential to the emotional health and well-being of the
CCFK’s patients and are offered free-of-charge to children and their families.
“The doctors and staff at the Center got us through some really tough times,”
said Alice Lovegrove. “We will never forget their compassionate care.”
