Diabetes and Obesity Institute Helps Clinicians Provide Quality Diabetes Care

As the regional leader in diabetes, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute is helping to ensure patients receive consistent, high quality care from the Hospital’s primary care providers.

According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 80 percent of diabetes care is delivered by primary care providers. Recently, 50 Winthrop clinicians from seven Hospital-affiliated primary care practices and the Winthrop Endocrinology faculty practice achieved recognition by The National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) Diabetes Recognition Program (DRP).

Recognition by the NCQA’s DRP identifies physicians who are well educated in diabetes management and consistently treat patients according to the best available scientific evidence. The DRP Program has measures which cover areas including A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol; eye examinations; foot examinations and kidney assessments; and smoking cessation advice or treatment.

“Physicians who complete the Diabetes Recognition Program demonstrate to their peers, patients and others in the diabetes community that they are part of an elite group that is publicly recognized for its skill in providing the highest level of diabetes care,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BCADM, CDE, Executive Director, Diabetes and Obesity Institute at Winthrop-University Hospital. With that goal in mind, Ms. Peragallo-Dittko spearheaded the initiative at Winthrop to champion the achievement of the Diabetes Recognition Program initially funded with support from the Health - care Association of New York State.

Further validating the importance of this initiative, Winthrop recently received a grant for $75,000 from the New York State Health Foundation to support the achievement of NCQA Diabetes Provider Recognition for 30 more Winthrop-based primary care providers.

“Winthrop-University Hospital has a long and distinguished history of providing excellence in diabetes care. This grant from the New York State Health Foundation will enable more of our primary care providers to engage in diabetes-related performance measurement and be recognized for their efforts in providing the highest quality care to patients with diabetes,” said Ms. Dittko.
