Winthrop Established as a Regional Clinical Campus

On December 1, 2011, Winthrop formally announced its designation as a Clinical Campus of Stony Brook Universitys School of Medicine. The new status for Winthrop was formally approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting body for medical schools, which defines a regional clinical campus as a geographically separated campus, but under the central administrative or program governance of the medical school. A regional clinical campus typically hosts third- and fourth-year medical students for the majority of their clinical experience and classroom training.

There are many rigorous standards that must be met in order to qualify for designation as a clinical campus, said Winthrop-University Hospital Chief Academic Officer John F. Aloia, MD, Dean of the Winthrop campus. This major achievement greatly enriches the culture of our Hospital through the constant inquiry that comes with higher education and the youthful enthusiasm of these new full-time members of the Winthrop team.

Winthrop has been a major teaching affiliate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine for over 40 years, with medical students completing rotations in a wide variety of disciplines. At the Winthrop Clinical Campus, 40 third-year and 40 fourthyear students will join us annually, beginning with the third-year cohort that arrived in July. The students attend both clinical rotations and didactic sessions at Winthrop, and return to Stony Brook to take a final exam at the end of each clerkship rotation. The majority of the Winthrop campus students currently live on campus.

Designation as a Clinical Campus is the logical and exciting extension of Winthrops long tradition of undergraduate medical education and ACGMEAccredited Graduate Medical Education Programs. A hearty Welcome! to the Pioneer Class of the Winthrop Clinical Campus.
