Winthrop Establishes New Division of Occupational & Environmental Medicine
Winthrop-University Hospital recently announced the creation of its Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine as the latest component of Winthrop’s Department of Medicine. Marc Wilkenfeld, MD, a recognized expert in Environmental Medicine and the impact of 9/11 on victims, first responders and people nearby the attacks, has been chosen to lead the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Winthrop as its founding Chief. Dr. Wilkenfeld’s plans for the Division also include the training of medical students and residents in occupational and environmental medicine and conducting research.
“With the development of an Occupational and Environmental Medicine Division, under the experienced leadership of Dr. Wilkenfeld, we will help members of the community get expert advice about how to work productively and safely, and will provide employers with a wide range of services to enhance the well-being of their employees,” said Michael Niederman, MD, Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Winthrop.
Dr. Wilkenfeld, who brings over 20 years of clinical and teaching experience to Winthrop, has also recently been appointed to serve on the New York State Workers Compensation Board as a member of its Medical Advisory Committee.
