American Hearth association Family & Friends CPR

Darlene Ann Ledner, RN, Certified Childbirth Educator, discusses what to expect when caring for a newborn during Winthrop�s Infant Care Class.
Winthrop-University Hospital understands the challenges that new parents face, and is here to help your entire family prepare for and adjust to the arrival of your new baby(ies).

Winthrop offers an exciting variety of educational classes for new and experienced moms-to-be and their families. Focusing on the unique needs of each family, these educational programs will help ease your transition into parenthood and make you feel more comfortable and confident with your newborn. Classes and programs are held at Winthrop locations and in the learning studio at a local maternity clothing retailer.

Preparing for Childbirth Class

This program, with its focus on natural childbirth (Lamaze), teaches the motherto- be and her coach about the birthing experience. Included are discussions on pain management options and Cesarean sections.

Infant Care Class

This class provides instruction and discussion on infant bathing, dressing, feeding and safety.

Breastfeeding Class

Led by a Board certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), this class provides mothers-tobe with practical information and strategies for breastfeeding, including positioning, latch-on, pumping, how to tell if the infant is receiving enough nurishment.

Sibling Preparation Class �Big Brother & Big Sister Day Camp�

A Certified Child Life Specialist gives big brothers and big sisters (ages 3-7) tips on how to help out with the new baby and boosts their self-esteem as they prepare for the arrival of their new sibling.

Pre-natal Yoga

During this eight week series, a certified yoga instructor will guide mothers-to-be in a safe and supportive manner through movements to support their pregnancy.

Infant CPR Anytime Program

Learn infant CPR and choking relief using your own personal American Heart Association CPR learning kit, which can be taken home to share with family and friends.

Family & Friends CPR This course includes CPR and choking relief for adults, children and infants. �Welcome to Winthrop!�


This free program provides essential information about Winthrop�s New Life Center, admitting process, labor and delivery, visiting hours and discharges, and includes a question & answer session with a registered nurse and pediatrician.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Led by a Board certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), this free support group helps mothers share the breastfeeding experience with other mothers, and provides guidance for common issues and concerns faced by breast - feeding mothers.

Music � Mommy & Baby

Through this 10 week series, led by Keri Worth, Music Together trained singer and songwriter, your little musician will come alive with song and dance. You and your baby will learn how to play instruments, dance and song-write together.

Call Winthrop�s Parent Education Department at (516) 663-2858 for specific dates, locations, fees and availability of programs. Don�t get caught unprepared for childbirth! Make sure you register early � we recommend in the fifth month of your pregnancy.
