Winthrop Does it Again… and Again… and Again!

Olympic medals, Grammy awards, Nobel prizes… they are symbols of excellence that validate the best, the brightest, and the most successful. In healthcare, these awards come in the form of a Gold Seal from the Joint Commission; achievement awards from the American Heart Association; recognition by HealthGrades; and various accreditations and designations as national Centers of Excellence.

Over the past few months, Winthrop has earned all of these accolades and more.

Winthrop was recently included in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals in the New York Metro Region and The Children’s Medical Center at Winthrop was named to U.S. News’ Best Children’s Hospitals rankings for providing high quality care in the specialty of pediatric diabetes and endocrinology.

The Hospital and our Home Health Agency received the Gold Seal of Approval™ and full three-year accreditation – with the highest praise – from The Joint Commission. In addition, Winthrop’s Home Health Agency was named to the 2011 HomeCare Elite™.

HealthGrades, the nation’s most trusted source of healthcare provider information, has named Winthrop-University Hospital a Distinguished Hospital for Clinical Excellence™ for the third year in a row – a distinction that places Winthrop among the top five percent of hospitals nationwide for superior clinical performance.

In addition to achieving this level of overall distinction, Winthrop was also named a recipient of 10 Specialty Excellence Awards in 2011 by HealthGrades.

Close on the heels of these awards, HealthGrades named Winthrop a recipient of both the 2011 HealthGrades Maternity Care Excellence Award and the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award. Winthrop is one of only four hospitals in New York and the only hospital in Nassau County to be ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for both maternity care and gynecological surgery. What’s more, Winthrop was recognized earlier this year by HealthGrades as a recipient of the 2011 Women’s Health Excellence Award and ranked among the top five percent in the nation for Women’s Health for the second year in a row. Winthrop is the only hospital in New York State to simultaneously receive these three prestigious awards from HealthGrades in 2011, reflecting the unmatched standard of care that women receive at Winthrop.

The Cancer Institute at Winthrop was recently surveyed by The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and garnered three-year Reaccreditation with Commendation.

And our Breast Health Center was awarded accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, making ours the only one in Nassau County to earn this prestigious accreditation, and the Winthrop Breast Imaging and Diagnostic Center was named a Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

What’s more, The American Heart Association has announced that Winthrop has earned the Get With The Guidelines Gold Achievement Award for its continued success in providing superior care to heart failure patients.

Inside this issue of Cornerstone, you will find additional information about these accomplishments and more.
