In recognition of a physician's extraordinary
benevolence and to honor him
for his 47 years of service as part of the
institution's world-class medical staff,
Winthrop-University Hospital has
rededicated and renamed its New Life
Conference Center to the Dr. Martin
Spatz Conference Center.
The passion of Dr.
Spatz's professional life was
Winthrop (then known as
Nassau Hospital when Dr.
Spatz first joined the Medical
Staff in 1947). In many ways,
the late Dr. Spatz was a pioneer
in the practice of
medicine/surgery, especially
urology, serving as Chief of
the Division of Urology and
Acting Chairman of the
Department of Urology for
23 years. At his retirement
dinner on August 31, 1994,
Dr. Spatz remarked, "…I
have seen the Hospital grow
from a 250-bed purely community
service Hospital…to
a 600-bed University Campus
Hospital – an academic institution –
but still devoted to excellent community
service. I continue to brag a little,
especially today, that I am most happy
to have been an active participant in
this development…it has resulted from
encouragement and guidance from a
most devoted Urological staff, the
cooperation of our Administration and
the support of our Board of Directors."

Present at the dedication of the Dr. Martin Spatz Conference Center
were Dr. Spatz's nieces Carol Price (left) and Kathy Pierce (right), along
with (second from left to right) Joseph Greensher, MD, Vice Chairman
of Winthrop's Department of Pediatrics, and the Hospital's Senior
Physician Advisor, Leon Berg, long-time friend of Dr. Spatz, and
John F. Collins, President & CEO of Winthrop.
Dr. Spatz's dream was to have his
name associated with this extraordinary
institution in perpetuity, and as of
October 5, 2010, his dream was fulfilled.
What's more, in
gratitude to Dr. Spatz for his
pioneering efforts and exceptional
dedication to medical
education and excellence,
the Board of Directors and
senior Administration at
Winthrop established the
Martin Spatz, MD, Award
for Medical Excellence. The
inaugural award was presented
to Dr. Spatz at the first
annual Medical Staff Service
Awards Dinner in 2002 and
since then, this prestigious
honor has been bestowed
annually to a physician
whose dedication and work
has raised the standard of
care at Winthrop.
