Each year during the December holiday season, friends and supporters
of Winthrop-University Hospital gather for the Yuletide Ball, an
elegant evening of dining, dancing and fundraising to benefit the
Hospital's Child Life Program. The 2010 Yuletide Ball, graciously hosted
by Garden City residents John and Liz Durand on December 11, 2010
was a great success, raising over $160,000.
The Yuletide Ball is a pivotal annual event that garners the community's support
for Winthrop's unique Child Life Program, through which specially trained Child Life
Specialists help children understand and cope with hospitalization. The caring and highly
trained staff use therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other diversions
to ensure that the hospital experience is as stress-free as possible for children and their
families. Child Life Specialists are available in the Pediatric Emergency Unit, the Cancer
Center for Kids, the Pediatric Specialty Center and the Hospital's Hagedorn Pediatric
Inpatient Center.
A vital program that serves
the full spectrum of inpatient,
outpatient and emergency services
at Winthrop, Child Life is
supported in its entirety by
philan thropic contributions.
