Using a Special Talent to Give Back
For retired consulting engineer Carl
Graber, his special talent for handcrafting
wooden toy trucks for his
five grandchildren and neighbors
has become more than just an
enjoyable hobby. It’s a unique way
through which he has been able to
give back.
Mr. Graber, a long-time patient
of Richard Ashley, MD, and Kevin
Marzo, MD, Chief of the Division of
Cardiology at Winthrop, is so appreciative
of the world-class care that
he’s received at Winthrop that he
decided to use his talent to bring joy
to pediatric patients. Over the past
two years, Mr. Graber constructed
and donated 50 hand-crafted wooden
toy trucks, station wagons, vans
and coupes for the Hospital’s Child
Life Program. The trucks have provided
countless hours of imaginative
playtime for young patients visiting
the Child Life Activity Center,
while others have been fortunate
to win the trucks as prizes and take
them home.
In addition to collecting surplus
materials from local construction
projects, Mr. Graber cuts and drills
the wood; as well as sands, paints
and assembles all of the parts. While
his efforts to put the trucks together
are great, the reward is even greater.
“The kids get a kick out of the
trucks and they help bring a smile to
their faces. It makes me feel so good
to do something nice for them,” said
Mr. Graber.
