A Cause to Celebrate Raises $155,000 for Winthrop’s Child Life Program

2009 Yuletide Soirée

Friends and supporters of Winthrop-University Hospital gathered at the Garden City home of Hector and Cathy Murphy on December 12 to celebrate in style at the 2009 Yuletide Soirée. With a new theme that featured a festive cocktail party-style atmosphere in an elegant lounge-like setting, this annual fundraiser was a great success, raising more than $164,000 for pediatric services at Winthrop.

Proceeds of the Yuletide Soirée benefit Winthrop’s unique Child Life Program, through which specially trained Child Life Specialists help children understand and cope with hospitalization. The caring and highly trained staff use therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other diversions to ensure that the hospital experience is as stress-free as possible for children and their families. Child Life Specialists are available in the Pediatric Emergency Unit, the Cancer Center for Kids, Pediatric Specialty Center and the Hospital’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center.
