L-R: Daniel P. Walsh, President and Chief
Executive Officer; Joseph and Laurel Anne
Mancino; and AnnMarie DiFrancesca,
Child Life Program Director.
Winthrop Board of Directors member
and retired Roslyn Savings Bank
chairman, Joseph Mancino, along
with his wife, Laurel Anne, recently
donated nearly $300,000 to support
the development of Winthrop's Child
Life Activity Center and the Pediatric
Emergency Room (ER) children's
waiting area.
Winthrop's skilled, board-certified
pediatricians, specially trained nurses
and pediatric specialists treat
thousands of children annually. Inside
the dedicated, specially designed
Pediatric Emergency Unit, 10 beds,
each outfitted with a bedside television,
help make patients comfortable
when receiving a consultation or
treatment. To alleviate the anxieties
young patients often face during medical
emergencies, the ER also
provides a rolling entertainment center
complete with video game units,
and an extensive collection of books,
puzzles, crayons and coloring books.
The child-friendly Pediatric ER waiting
area includes a private space
complete with a saltwater fish tank
to calm the young visitors.
Located in the Hospital's
Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center,
the Child Life Activity Center offers
patients a procedure-free space to
simply be children. Vibrant colors and
cheerful murals add to the Center's
ambiance while expansive skylights in
high-vaulted ceilings brighten the
room that is fully equipped to provide
a wide variety of entertainment and
activities. Certified Child Life
Specialists work to engage the children
in therapeutic play, helping them
better understand medical procedures
and deal with the fear often associated
with hospitalization and illness.
"We are most grateful to the
Mancino family for their generosity as
it will help our talented medical and
support team continue to provide
superior quality, specialized health
care for our community's next generation,"
said Daniel P. Walsh, President
and Chief Executive Officer.
