 Richard J. Nicolello, Nassau County
Legislature (left), and Angelo Ferrara,
Councilman, Town of North Hempstead
(right), presented Virginia Peragallo-Dittko,
APRN, Director, Diabetes Education
Center, Winthrop (center), with citations
recognizing the extraordinary support the
Center has offered the community.
Winthrop's Diabetes Education Center
recently opened its new, expanded
facility at 163 Mineola Boulevard, only
a few blocks from where the Center
was originally established in 1979.
The new facility houses a larger,
modern classroom that comfortably
seats patients taking part in a variety
of services the Center offers, including group education classes, refresher
courses and individual meetings
with dietitians.
"Self-management education plays a
pivotal role in empowering people with
diabetes to change behavior. However
the management of diabetes requires
learning complex information and new
skills," said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko,
APRN, Director, Diabetes Education
Center, Winthrop. "The new facility
allows our staff of nurses and dietitians
to use a variety of resources that make
complex concepts understandable and
support healthful choices."
The Center serves adults and
children with diabetes and offers the
only free support groups for children
with diabetes. The support groups are
open to all families of children with
diabetes who receive treatment anywhere in Nassau, Suffolk or Queens.
For more information about the program, call (516) 663-2350.
