Despite the gloom of a rainy May morning, runners of all ages eagerly toed the starting line at the fourth annual "5K Family Fun Walk/Run" at Jon's Park benefiting Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids.

The participants, who helped raise more than $50,000, turned out not only to support the Center, but also to celebrate the life of Genelle Taney, a Great Neck teenager, who passed away after battling cancer.

"The generosity of our committee members, especially Mindy Gordon and Lore Kent, the corporate and merchant sponsors, contributors and friends, matched by the community's enthusiasm year after year emphasizes the importance of the critical services the Center provides cancer patients," said Maria Kavan, Development Specialist, Cancer Center for Kids.
