Winthrop-University Hospital celebrated another year of accomplishments during its much-anticipated Gala at Club W, held on October 22 at the Reckson Plaza. The annual fund-raising event, which raised more than $650,000 to benefit Winthrop's programs and services, took 650 friends and supporters of the Hospital on an exotic trip to Asia with world-class cuisine and mesmerizing, cultural entertainment.
Winthrop also paid tribute to Charles F. Murphy, Vice President and General Manager of the Turner Construction Company, and Robert S.
Bartolomeo, MD, two men who have contributed greatly to the Hospital's long and distinguished history and have left their unique marks on its progress.
"Dr. Bartolomeo, one of Winthrop's most valued and accomplished physicians, is a highly respected leader in the medical community and he has made a significant difference at the Hospital," praised Daniel P. Walsh, President and Chief Executive Officer, Winthrop. "We are truly honored to celebrate him, his career and his devotion to his patients and profession." Affiliated with Winthrop for 29 years, Dr. Bartolomeo has a thriving gastroenterology practice in Mineola and is highly regarded as a compassionate physician who responds in a very personal way to the needs of his countless patients and their families.
Mr. Murphy, a 27-year construction industry veteran, is a respected business leader who was born and raised in Garden City. His knowledge of the community and his determination to do the best for Winthrop have been vital to the success of the Hospital's recent renovation and expansion projects.
"A concerned citizen, corporate leader and philanthropist, Mr. Murphy has been involved in many charitable endeavors, including serving as an active member of Winthrop's golf tournament and past Gala committees," said Mr. Walsh.
"Being able to blend high technology with compassion is no small achievement; it requires determination, teamwork, talent and the kind of support we have received from both Dr.
Bartolomeo and Mr. Murphy," added Mr. Walsh. "We truly appreciate the generosity of not only Dr. Bartolomeo and Mr. Murphy, but the support we received from our event committee that helped to make the 2005 Gala one of Winthrop's most successful."
