  • With a flawless autumn evening as its backdrop, Winthrop-University Hospital's annual fund-raising gala crackled with excitement on October 23rd at EAB Plaza.

Magically transformed into Club W - Monte Carlo, the setting sparkled with more than 600 avid supporters and friends of the Hospital. The elegant evening, which raised $582,000 to benefit Winthrop's programs and services, featured a superb dance band, a dazzling casino, exciting entertainment and outstanding prizes.

But there was also a bitter-sweet moment when the event honored the memory of Alfred H. Hicks, former Board Chairman. "Fred was a plain-spoken, benevolent man, who embraced life and forged a unique relationship with Winthrop that will long be cherished," said Daniel P. Walsh, President and CEO of Winthrop. "His personal commitment to Winthrop helped us evolve from a community hospital into a recognized, regional healthcare resource for all Long Islanders."

Also honored was Frank A. Monteleone, MD, a highly respected surgeon on Winthrop's staff for more than 30 years and former President of the Hospital's Medical Staff Organization. "I'm very grateful for this tribute, and in my heart I'm sharing it with the many excellent doctors and compassionate nurses I've had the good fortune to work with over three decades," said Dr. Monteleone.

The Gala also commemorated this year's opening of the Hospital's Pediatric Inpatient and Heart Surgery Centers, as well as the expansion and renovation of the Emergency Department and separate Pediatric Emergency Unit.

Enjoying the excellent cuisine and filling the dance floor, the guests applauded Winthrop's accomplishments, anticipating a future filled with even more exciting achievements, and looking forward to celebrating again next year.
