Winthrop hosts ribbon-cutting for new Flu Treatment Center (l.-r.): John P. Broder, Vice President External Affairs & Development, Winthrop-University Hospital; John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop; Barry Rosenthal, Chairman of the Emergency Department at Winthrop; Audie Liametz, MD, Assistant Medical Director of Winthrop’s Emergency Department; Mineola Mayor Jack Martins; Dennis Sheridan, Vice President, Administration at Winthrop, and Wendy Goldstein, Winthrop’s Director of Public Affairs.
Mineola, NY – Taking the lead in an innovative and proactive approach to flu diagnosis and treatment, Winthrop-University Hospital has converted a vacant bank across the street from its Emergency Department into a dedicated Flu Treatment Center.

The hospital has renovated the former Astoria Federal Savings space at 222 Station Plaza in Mineola to handle overflow from the Emergency Department (ED) and to keep possible flu patients separate from the general hospital population.

On Monday, November 16 at 9:00 a.m., Mineola Mayor Jack Martins joined Winthrop president and CEO John F. Collins and other hospital leadership in a ribbon cutting ceremony on the steps of the new Winthrop Flu Treatment Center.

“In response to the predictions of widespread seasonal and H1N1 influenza this year, Winthrop is taking steps to be prepared for an influx of patients who may seek treatment this flu season,” said Mr. Collins. “And by creating a separate treatment area for people with flu-like symptoms, we can reduce the likelihood of flu patients transmitting the illness to other patients, family members and staff in the Emergency Department,” he added.

Patients who require assistance in moving from the main ED to the Flu Treatment Center or who require transfer to the hospital following evaluation at the Flu Treatment Center will be transported in a dedicated hospital “FLU BUGgy.”

In addition, the Winthrop Flu Treatment Center is easily accessible by car and public transportation, located adjacent to the LIRR Mineola Station and the MTA’s Mineola Intermodal Center, a major transportation hub.

Flu vacations are not provided in Winthrop’s Flu Treatment Center, however – the center is for evaluation and treatment only.
