STARLIGHT STARBRIGHT CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION MAKES WISHES COME TRUE AT WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

Mineola, NY – Every day, Certified Child Life Specialists at Winthrop-University Hospital address the unique emotional and developmental needs of young patients through supervised play, recreation, education and emotional support. Thanks to a generous funding by the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, Winthrop has expanded its renowned Child Life Program with the addition of another part-time Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS) to its dynamic team. The CCLS will initiate and develop the child life programming in Winthrop’s Pediatric Specialty Care Center.

In addition to receiving support through Starlight’s Pediatric Hospital Support Program, the Foundation will also be donating two new Nintendo Wii Fun Centers, unique entertainment centers that are each equipped with a flat-panel television, DVD player and a Nintendo Wii Game System. The Fun Centers, designed to help alleviate feelings of anxiety and fear during children’s hospitalization, will help provide hours of interactive play for patients in Winthrop’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center.

“The Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation has been a generous supporter of Winthrop’s Child Life Program over the years,” said AnnMarie DiFrancesca, Director of the Child Life Program at Winthrop. “The Foundation’s renewed support is enhancing our Child Life Program support services and helping us to continue to provide world-class, personalized care to the thousands of children that come to Winthrop each year.”

Over the past 10 years, Starlight’s Pediatric Hospital Support Program has supported the Child Life Program at Winthrop with approximately $160,000 in grants.

“Starlight’s mission is to help seriously ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education, and family activities,” said Elaine Siver, Executive Director of Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation of NY*NJ*CT. “This program is designed to aid children’s services in hospitals such as Winthrop. We are confident it will help restore some of the happiness that a serious illness takes away and make a child’s hospital experience more pleasant and when possible, more fun.”

Recognized as a center of excellence for pediatric care, Winthrop’s Institute for Family Care is an outstanding provider of healthcare for children and adolescents. From its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and family-friendly Pediatric Emergency Unit to its renowned Cancer Center for Kids, the Hospital is dedicated to providing specialized attention and emotional support for children and their families.
