Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Collin Brathwaite, MD, to the position of Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery and Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center.

A board-certified surgeon and critical care specialist with expertise in a range of general surgery procedures, Dr. Brathwaite is highly regarded in the field of bariatric weight-loss surgery. He has performed more than 1,400 procedures including Laparoscopic Gastric Banding, Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the minimally-invasive Sleeve Gastrectomy – an operation that drastically reduces the size of the stomach. In addition, Dr. Brathwaite is highly-skilled in performing revision surgeries to correct and repair problems related to previous bariatric procedures.

As a member of the Hospital’s surgical faculty, Dr. Brathwaite will perform surgeries at Winthrop-University Hospital, yet for the convenience of his patients, consultation and post-surgical follow-up care – including education and psychological support – will be provided at the Bariatric Surgery Center at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola and at the Hospital’s satellite office in Patchogue – making this the only Long Island bariatric surgery program with locations in Nassau and Suffolk county.

Prior to joining the surgical faculty at Winthrop, Dr. Brathwaite held leadership positions at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania, St. Catherine of Sienna Medical Center in Smithtown, and Stony Brook University Hospital. At Stony Brook University Hospital, Dr. Brathwaite was the Director of the Bariatric Surgery program, and also served as Chief of General Surgery, Associate Professor of Surgery, and head of the Trauma and Critical Care Program.

Dr. Brathwaite is distinguished nationwide as a leader in the development and standardization of bariatric surgery practices. He has served as a consultant to the New York State Health Department and New York Health Plan Association in the development of bariatric surgery guidelines for the state of New York. A resident of Setauket, NY, Dr. Brathwaite earned his MD from Howard University.

Winthrop-University Hospital offers comprehensive counseling for people who have had bariatric surgery and for individuals who are considering the surgery. Surgical treatment and pre- and post-operative topics are discussed in every meeting, as well as extensive discussion on a special topic each month. Bariatric support group meetings are held in Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center at 101 Mineola Blvd., Mineola and at the satellite office in Patchogue. Please call (516) 663-3300 for additional information; meeting dates, times and directions; or to schedule a consultation.
