WINTHROP SUPPORTS ADA’S WALK TO STOP DIABETES

Winthrop-University Hospital will once again participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk to Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 28 at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This non-competitive, family and team friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes - a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have pre-diabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after fasting for at least eight hours) but are not high enough to be classified as having type 2 diabetes. A person who is not treated for pre-diabetes may soon develop type 2 diabetes and is also at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Stop Diabetes is the movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on millions of individuals and families across the nation.

“Winthrop is proud to support the American Diabetes Association in its efforts to raise awareness, promote healthy living, and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts, and critical research that will ultimately put an end to diabetes once and for all,” said J. Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, CDN, BC-ADM, CDE, Director of The Diabetes Education Center at Winthrop. “We encourage members of the community to join with Winthrop on September 28 for a healthy activity in support of this worthy cause.”
