WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES 2014 DATES FOR THE DIABETES CORE CURRICULUM WORKSHOP™

~ Four-day workshop prepares participants to take the CDE and BC-ADM exams ~

Committed to building the next generation of diabetes educators, Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the 2014 dates for the Diabetes Core Curriculum Workshop™ (DCCW) – a unique four day course that designed to prepare health professionals for the Certified Diabetes Educator ® (CDE) examination or to provide the requisite continuing education credits for renewal of the CDE® or BC-ADM credentials. The spring course will take place April 28-May 1, 2014; the fall course is set for October 20-23, 2014. Both programs will be held at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City, NY.

Open to professionals in all health disciplines, including, but not limited to, advanced practice and registered nurses, registered dietitians, pharmacists, physicians, mental health professionals, podiatrists, exercise physiologists and certified health education specialists, the DCCW also prepares health professionals in the principles and skills required for chronic disease management.

The DCCW has achieved national recognition as a prestigious continuing education course. The workshop, led by a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, has been structured to help diabetes educators update their knowledge, enhance their application and analytic skills and build confidence through professional self-development. Under the umbrella of the Hospital’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute, the DCCW is now a part of a considerable portfolio of diabetes-specific services that boldly positions Winthrop as the regional leader in diabetes care.

“There is a growing body of research supporting and quantifying the effectiveness of diabetes education in improving metabolic outcomes for patients with diabetes,” said Virginia Peragallo-Dittko, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, Executive Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute. “Increased contact with diabetes educators has also been associated with lower hospitalization rates and reduced costs. The rising incidence of diabetes should result in a high demand for diabetes educators especially among low income and minority populations. The range of work settings will broaden, and will include not only the traditional hospital outpatient and physician office positions, but also non-traditional settings, including chronic disease management. The DCCW supports and inspires those who are beginning their career
as diabetes educators and provides continuing education to current diabetes educators.”

To learn more about the DCCW course, please call Winthrop’s Diabetes and Obesity Institute at (516) 663-6976 or visit www.winthrop.org/departments/education/cme/ to register.
