WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OPENS STATE-OF-THE-ART DENTAL FACILITY
Winthrop-University Hospital’s Department of Dental Medicine is pleased to announce the opening of the Center for Family Dental Medicine, a full service dental facility located at 200 Old Country Road, Suite 460 in Mineola. This state-of-the-art center was developed to serve the community’s patients and allow dentists to complete their New York State residency requirements in a hospital setting.
The new center, which features 10 high-tech exam rooms that utilize the latest in dental technologies, offers specialized diagnostic and oral care from preventive measures through oral and maxillofacial surgery. Services (which can also be performed with sedation or general anesthesia) include routine care; cleanings; fillings; root canals; implants; extractions; cosmetic care; porcelain crowns; custom mouth guards; treatment for sleep apnea (disorders); oral lesions; and a full range of pediatric dental care services.
“As a hospital-based program, we are also uniquely positioned to care for medically complex patients, such as those with cancer, autoimmune diseases or other medical problems that require advanced treatments,” said Andrei Barasch, DMD, MDSc, Chairman of the Department of Dental Medicine at Winthrop.
Patients whose fragile health requires anesthesia stand-by are treated in Winthrop’s Operating Rooms, with full cardiovascular monitoring. Diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with mucosal diseases, including those that require systemic medical treatment and long-term follow up, are also available.
“Often times, this level of care is not able to be performed in community dental offices. In these cases, Winthrop’s Department of Dental Medicine will work in collaboration with a patient’s community dentist to perform the required treatments or procedures,” added Dr. Barasch.
Under the expert leadership of Dr. Barasch, the Center’s team also includes Dr. Kathleen Agoglia, Director of the Dental Medicine Training Program, Dr. Leonard Hoffman, Chief of the Division of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, and attending faculty with expertise in all specialties of dentistry.
