FOUNDATION MAKES “MIRACLES” FOR WINTHROP’S CANCER CENTER FOR KIDS

(l.-r.) Ed Chewens, Vice President of Women's and Children's Services at Winthrop; Patty Tenaglia, Co-Founder of the Miracle Foundation; Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Winthrop and Director of the Cancer Center for Kids; Joseph Castronovo, President of the Miracle Foundation; Nicole Almeida, MS, CCLS, Director of the Child Life Program at Winthrop; Linda Sweeney, Pediatric Development Manager of Winthrop’s Cancer Center for Kids; and Ashley Carlo, Development Specialist at Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids
The Miracle Foundation, one of Long Island’s leading charitable foundations that is dedicated to increasing cancer awareness, improving patient care, and supporting cancer research, presented a $50,000 check to the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop-University Hospital to support its Child Life Program. Whether it’s a reading of Good Night Moon while a child is undergoing chemotherapy or creating an evening of therapeutic activity at the Center’s Kids Club, The Child Life Program is always there, lending hope and a helping hand.

The CCFK is the largest outpatient facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders in Nassau County. Part of Winthrop’s award-winning pediatric specialty practices, the Center is a member of the Children’s Oncology Group, an international consortium leading the way in the battle against pediatric cancer.

The Miracle Foundation’s latest contribution brings its total Child Life giving at Winthrop to $350,000. Hailing it as “one of the largest donations the hospital has received in support of its Child Life program,” Pediatric Development Manager Linda Sweeney said, “We’re so proud of our special partnership with the Miracle Foundation. Their generosity sets the standard for underwriting our Child Life programs, which bring so much comfort and care to our children and their families.”

“We value our affiliation with Winthrop's Cancer Center For Kids and are proud to have been responsible for the introduction of a Child Life Specialist at the Cancer Center for Kids seven years ago,” said Patti Tenaglia, co-founder of the Miracle Foundation. “The feedback from parents and the children who are receiving this support from this compassionate and skilled professional has been overwhelmingly positive and gratitude filled. We were pleased to fund the position initially when the field of ‘Child Life’ was emerging and have been very gratified to be able to sustain this important support for kids battling cancer.”

Thanks to the Foundation’s leadership support, the CCFK continues to forge new paths as it addresses the emotional and quality-of-life issues faced by pediatric cancer patients and their families every day. Miracle’s philanthropy has enabled the Center to hire a full-time Child Life Specialist who has broadened programmatic initiatives while implementing and expanding the Center’s multi-faceted services. CCFK Director Dr. Mark Weinblatt concurs. “This foundation continues to perform ‘miracles’ for our children by lifting their spirits and helping them get through the most difficult phase of their lives.”
