WINTHROP ANNOUNCES 16TH ANNUAL “A CAUSE TO CELEBRATE” TO BENEFIT THE CHILD LIFE PROGRAM

Event set for March 21, 2013 at The Garden City Hotel

The Children’s Medical Center at Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the 16th Annual “A Cause to Celebrate” benefitting the Child Life Program. Honoring Garden City residents Beth and Spiro Spirakis, longtime supporters of Winthrop, the event will take place on Thursday, March 21, 2013, at The Garden City Hotel.

This year’s event will feature musical entertainment by Mike DelGuidice & Big Shot, performing the music of Billy Joel.

The funds raised by “A Cause to Celebrate” support Winthrop’s extraordinary Child Life Program through which certified Child Life Specialists utilize play and education to improve the understanding of medical procedures, teach relaxation techniques to help the patients cope with illness or surgery and provide emotional support for the entire family.

“Using a team approach, our Child Life Specialists work closely with doctors, nurses and support staff to provide children with a sense of control,” explained Warren Rosenfeld, MD, Chairman of Pediatrics at Winthrop. “This interaction gives our young patients a chance to express their feelings, ask questions and understand the entire hospital experience.”

“We are so appreciative of the community’s loyal support to Winthrop’s Child Life Program,” said Nicole Almeida, MS, CCLS, Director of Winthrop’s Child Life Program. “Their goodwill continues to enable the Child Life team to meet the unique psychosocial needs of our pediatric patients and their families.”

Mr. Spirakis is Managing Director of Freepoint Medals and Concentrates LLC, a leading global merchant of physical base medals. Mrs. Spirakis is the PTA Director for the Garden City Middle School. They have two children, Steven and Matthew.

Individual tickets, including cocktails and dinner, and sponsorship packages are available. For more information or to make a reservation, please call Winthrop’s Office of Development at (516) 663–3398. To make reservations online, visit www.winthrop.org/events.
