WINTHROP’S MEDICAL STAFF ORGANIZATION PRESIDENT PAUL HARNICK, MD, TO BE HONORED BY THE AHA AT 50TH ANNUAL LONG ISLAND HEART BALL

Winthrop-University Hospital cardiologist and President of the Hospital’s Medical Staff Organization, Paul Eliot Harnick, MD, FACC, has been named the American Heart Association’s (AHA) 2013 Cardiovascular Science Award Recipient. Dr. Harnick will be honored for his dedication to promoting the mission of the AHA to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke at 50th Annual Long Island Heart Ball on April 12, 2013 at the Cradle Aviation Museum.

Dr. Harnick is Managing Partner of Cardiovascular Medical Associates (CMA), a multispecialty group practice located in Garden City. Established in 1982, the practice has grown to be one of the largest private practices on Long Island and is an affiliate of Winthrop.

After graduating from Jamaica High School in Queens, NY, Dr. Harnick studied Biology at Cornell University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Harnick attended medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical Center and completed his internal medicine training at Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. He completed his fellowship in Cardiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine under the directorship of the late Dr. Edmund Sonnenblick, a pioneer in cardiac hemodynamics and congestive heart failure research.

Board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, Dr. Harnick is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and of the American College of Physicians. His clinical practice is in Clinical Cardiology where he focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Dr. Harnick and his colleagues at CMA have participated in numerous clinical research studies over the years and were among the earliest adopters of the electronic medical record.

A member of the Winthrop Medical Staff since 1982, Dr. Harnick also sits on the Hospital’s Board of Directors. In addition to serving on a number of Hospital committees, Dr. Harnick is a member of the Steering Committee of the newly formed physician hospital organization, Winthrop PHO, Inc., and Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Long Island American Heart Association.

Dr. Harnick and his wife, Kathy, reside in East Hills, NY.

Winthrop-University Hospital has a long-standing relationship with the AHA and is a proud supporter of the organization’s Annual Long Island Heart Ball. In the event’s 50 year history, several Winthrop-affiliated physicians have been honored including Dr. Mark A. Kessler; Dr. William C. Scott; Dr. Anthony Thomas Gambino; Dr. Vellore T. Padmanabhan; Dr. Mark Goodman; and former President & CEO, Daniel P. Walsh.

The 50th Annual Long Island Heart Ball celebrates the AHA’s work and mission; donors and volunteers; and — most importantly — the lives saved and improved because of everyone’s efforts. The Heart Ball promises to be an engaging evening of fun and passion bringing community and philanthropic leaders together.
