SUMMER BBQ AND POOL PARTY MARK A MILESTONE FOR FORMER WINTHROP PATIENT

Five years ago, Anthony Santi of East Rockaway received his last cancer treatment at the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop-University Hospital.

“There were many tears and many prayers up until that day. Our prayers were definitely answered,” said a jubilant Karen Santi of Williston Park, who hosted a “celebration of life” summer barbeque and pool party at her home to mark this milestone in her son’s life. For those who have faced a cancer diagnosis, a milestone is the fifth anniversary of the last treatment, or when the doctor determines that the patient is cancer-free.

The Santi family and invited guests contributed more than $1,400 in appreciation for what the family termed “the miracle of modern medicine” to benefit the CCFK’s psychosocial programs. Since its essential therapeutic services—like Family Support, Kids Club, and Music Therapy—are provided free to patients and families, voluntary donations help sustain the Center’s mission as a haven of hope during some of the toughest times in a family’s life.

Offering the highest standards of skilled medical care, the CCFK is Nassau County’s largest outpatient facility for treating children with cancer and blood disorders. As a collaborative member of the prestigious Children’s Oncology Group, the Center implements new treatments and cutting-edge protocols, and administers and coordinates research studies and clinical trial information. Patients like Anthony Santi are emblematic of the success that an extraordinary legacy of outreach and care can achieve.
