MICHAEL AMMAZZALORSO, MD, CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER AT WINTHROP, APPOINTED TO NEW YORK STATE COUNCIL ON GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has appointed Glen Cove resident Michael Ammazzalorso, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Winthrop-University Hospital, to the New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education (GME).
The New York State Council on Graduate Medical Education was created by Executive Order in 1987 (and reauthorized most recently by Executive Order on January 1, 2007) to provide advice to the Governor and Commissioner of Health on the formulation and implementation of State policies relating to medical education and training.
Dr. Ammazzalorso shares the Council’s commitment to Graduate Medical Education and physicians and joins a devoted group of leaders who have championed causes, including primary care education, increasing underrepresented minorities in medicine, and reducing resident work hours that have distinguished New York as a national leader in Graduate Medical Education.
Dr. Ammazzalorso is a Master of the American College of Physicians – the nation’s largest medical specialty society – and is a fellow of the Nassau Academy of Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ammazzalorso has been consistently recognized for his outstanding commitment and service to both patients and medical students. He was named the Department of Medicine’s Attending of the Year in 1996, 1990, and 2012, and has been the recipient of several Excellence in Teaching Awards and the Aesculapius Award in Recognition of Outstanding Teaching from Stony Brook University College of Medicine.
Winthrop-University Hospital was recently designated a Clinical Campus of Stony Brook University’s School of Medicine, an exciting extension of the Hospital’s long tradition of undergraduate medical education and ACGME-Accredited Graduate Medical Education Programs. Winthrop hosts 80 third- and fourth-year medical students for the majority of their clinical experience and classroom training. This major achievement enriches the culture of the Hospital through the constant inquiry that comes with higher education and the youthful enthusiasm of these new full-time members of the Winthrop team.
