WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES TWO MAJOR APPOINTMENTS IN THE DIVISION OF PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE






Steve H. Salzman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Winthrop-University Hospital, has announced two major appointments in the Hospital’s Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Shilpa DeSouza, MD, of Mineola, NY, has been named Medical Director of Winthrop’s Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) Center. Dr. DeSouza joins Winthrop following the completion of a fellowship in Pulmonary Vascular Disease at Tufts Medical Center under the tutelage of internationally renowned PH specialist Nicholas Hill, MD. Prior to that, she completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

As Medical Director of Winthrop’s Pulmonary Hypertension Center, Dr. DeSouza is responsible for overseeing the comprehensive evaluation and care of patients with pulmonary hypertension as well as supervising the Center’s clinical trials. She has extensive experience with all forms of PH treatments and is one of a select few PH clinicians in the tri-state area to perform her own right heart catheterizations – a procedure that evaluates the blood pressure in the right side of the heart and lungs – and vasodilator (drugs that increase blood flow) trials.

Dr. DeSouza is Board Certified in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine as well as Internal Medicine. She is a member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association’s (PHA) Clinicians and Researchers Network and is recognized by the PHA as a certified PH provider.

Joseph Mathew, MD, of Queens Village, NY, has been named Medical Director of the Respiratory Care Department. Dr. Mathew assumed this position following the completion a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases & Critical Care Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. Prior to that, he served as Chief Medical Resident at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York where he completed his internal medicine training.

As Medical Director of Winthrop’s Respiratory Care Department, Dr. Mathew is responsible for patient management as well as overseeing the teaching of fellows, residents and medical students. He brings with him many specialized skills including expertise in Critical Care Ultrasonography, Bronchoscopy, Advanced Airway Management, Pleural Diseases and Simulation Training. Dr. Mathew is also involved in a number of important Hospital initiatives designed to improve patient care.

An active researcher, Dr. Mathew has received numerous honors including the Young Investigator Award and Best Case Presentation Award at the American College of Chest Physicians’ 2009 annual meeting. Dr. Mathew has also had many papers published in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Mathew is a member of several professional organizations including the American Thoracic Society, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Critical Care Medicine, American College of Physicians, and the American Medical Association. He is Board Certified in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Internal Medicine.
