FIFTH ANNUAL BLACK & WHITE BALL RAISES OVER $325K FOR WINTHROP’S CANCER CENTER FOR KIDS

At the Fifth annual Winthrop-University Hospital Cancer Center for Kids’ Black and White Ball, Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Winthrop and Director of the CCFK, presented honorees Donna and Allan Axelowitz of Huntington with a token of appreciation for their long-time support.
On Thursday evening, April 7th, the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at Winthrop- University Hospital held its Fifth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York. Close to 400 guests from the metropolitan area’s corporate, healthcare, and philanthropic communities, in addition to major event sponsors, Charlie’s Champions, Pall Corporation, and Rich and Ali Volpe, helped raise over $325,000, bringing the event’s total five-year fundraising efforts to almost 1.5 million dollars to benefit the CCFK’s psychosocial, child life, and creative arts therapy programs.

WCBS Radio’s Sophia Hall, a long-time CCFK supporter and volunteer, emceed the program and welcomed the crowd. John F. Collins, Winthrop’s President and CEO, applauded the Center’s accomplishments and discussed Winthrop’s goals for the future.

The honorees for this special evening were long-time devoted supporters Allan and Donna Axelowitz of Huntington, whose son, Ryan, was a patient of Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. The couple described their family’s journey and thanked the Center’s team for becoming part of their “extended family” along the way. “We are so grateful for having had the opportunity to meet other families and help them through those trying and sometimes impossible moments,” they said, and they urged all those present to continue to donate and give their time to help support the CCFK.

“Allan and Donna are constantly offering their friendship and services to our functions and fundraising efforts,” praised Dr. Weinblatt. “Between volunteering, providing toys and gifts for our patients, and donating funds, they are always there with their smiling faces.”

“Donna and Allan have been with us from our first curtain call. Unsung heroes, their friendship and philanthropy have brought the Center’s fundraising efforts to a new level,” said Linda Sweeney, Practice Manager of the CCFK and Chair of the Black and White Ball.

Winthrop-University Hospital together with its affiliated practitioners have collaborated to create the Cancer Center for Kids. The Cancer Center for Kids’ services are provided by both the Hospital and Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists affiliated with Winthrop Pediatric Associates, P.C. (“WPA”) who utilize both the state-of-the-science facilities of the Hospital and WPA’s new outpatient practice.

Diagnosing and treating the range of cancers and blood disorders in children is the focus of specialists in Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids. Staffed by pediatric hematologists/oncologists with decades of experience, the Center is a unique regional resource that caters to children's medical needs and also addresses the psychosocial issues they and their families face.
