“CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: TREATMENT OPTIONS” FREE LECTURE AT WINTHROP MAY 9TH

People with chronic kidney disease have options for treatment that can provide the best fit for their lifestyle or personal circumstances, and therefore, offer them a better quality of life. To learn about these options and support services available to patients, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Division of Nephrology will offer a free program for the community, “Chronic Kidney Disease: Treatment Options,” on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 6:30 PM. The program will be held at Winthrop’s Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard, at the corner of Second Street in Mineola, and will offer an explanation of Winthrop’s kidney programs, including access to transplant services at New York Presbyterian Hospital (NYP)/Columbia University Medical Center.

Naveed Masani, MD, Medical Director of the Outpatient Dialysis Unit at Winthrop, and Joann DiGirolomo, RN, Home Dialysis Nursing Supervisor at Winthrop’s Dialysis Center in Mineola, will discuss information about outpatient dialysis (treatment at a Dialysis Center), home hemodialysis (dialysis given through a machine in the home) and peritoneal dialysis (treatments at home, at work or while traveling). Joan Kelly, RN, Chief Transplant Coordinator, New York-Presbyterian, The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, will provide information about transplantation through Winthrop’s Gateway Program to NYP/Columbia University Medical Center, which provides patients with advanced kidney disease access to NYP/Columbia’s transplant team with pre-surgical evaluations, testing preparation and post-surgical care at Winthrop.

Relevant information about nutrition and social work services will also be presented by Winthrop’s Nephrology team. A question and answer period will be included. Attendees are asked to arrive at 6:15 PM for registration. Parking and the entrance are available in the rear of the building. Admission is free, but seating is limited and pre-registration is required. To reserve a seat, please call (516) 663-9032.
