WINTHROP'S CANCER INSTITUTE RE-ACCREDITED BY AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS
Mineola, NY – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted three-year Accreditation with Commendation to The Cancer Institute at Winthrop-University Hospital. Winthrop’s Cancer Institute was granted reaccreditation after a rigorous evaluation process and review of its compliance with the following standards – cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement.
“Accreditation emphasizes and validates Winthrop-University Hospital’s commitment to its patients and physicians to provide the resources to ensure the highest quality patient care, diagnostics and treatments, which all result in marked improvements in survivorship,” said Richard Rivera, MPH, MT, LCLT, CHE, Vice President, Administration at Winthrop.
“It is estimated that accredited programs diagnose and treat 80 percent of all new cancer cases annually in the United States,” added Eva Chalas, MD, Chief of Gynecologic Oncology and Director of Clinical Cancer Services at Winthrop. “Winthrop’s CoC reaccreditation with commendation is a tremendous achievement that we are all very proud of.”
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922, the CoC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival rates and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education and the monitoring of comprehensive, quality care.
