NEW STARLIGHT FUN CENTER ™ LIFTS SPIRITS OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS AT WINTHROP
Mineola, NY – Children undergoing treatment at Winthrop-University Hospital are smiling brighter. Through an ongoing partnership between Colgate-Palmolive Company and Starlight Children’s Foundation, and with the support of BJ’s Wholesale Club, a new Starlight Fun Center™ was recently unveiled at the Hospital’s Pediatric Specialty Center.
Representatives from Winthrop-University Hospital, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Colgate-Palmolive and BJ’s Wholesale Club recently gathered at the Hospital’s Pediatric Specialty Center for the dedication of a new Starlight Fun Center™ for use by pediatric patients.
For children who may be facing surgery, enduring long outpatient treatments or fighting loneliness after hospital visiting hours have ended, Starlight Fun Centers™ provide a comforting break. Each Fun Center™ mobile entertainment unit features a Sharp AQUOS™ LCD TV, DVD player and Nintendo Wii™ gaming system to provide hours of fun and distraction.
“Over the years, The Starlight Children’s Foundation has been a generous supporter of Winthrop’s Child Life Program,” said Nicole Almeida, Director of the Child Life Program at Winthrop. “The Foundation’s support, along with the support of Colgate-Palmolive Company and BJ’s Wholesale Club, has enhanced our program and has helped us in our mission to continue to provide personalized care to the thousands of children that come to Winthrop each year.”
“When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, the day-to-day joys of childhood take a back seat to the rigors of treatment and hospitalization,” said Jenny Isaacson, VP Brand Marketing & Communications, Starlight Children’s Foundation. “Our Fun Centers help ease the isolation and fear children often experience while in the hospital. We’re proud to join Colgate-Palmolive and BJ’s Wholesale Club in presenting this new Fun Center to Winthrop-University Hospital.”
“Colgate is proud to support Starlight Children’s Foundation and its dedication to helping seriously ill children and their families cope with the challenges that accompany prolonged childhood illness,” said Marie Agnes Daumas, Collaborative Customer Events, Colgate-Palmolive. “Starlight’s programs ease the burden on seriously ill children and their families and help them to better deal with, understand and manage their illnesses. With the local support of BJ’s Wholesale Club, we hope the Fun Center will help bring smiles to the children at Winthrop-University Hospital.”
This year, Colgate-Palmolive celebrated its 21st year of partnering with Starlight. During the more than two-decade partnership, Colgate has donated more than 1,300 Starlight Fun Centers™ and about $8.5 million to Starlight to promote Starlight’s mission and help improve the lives of young patients and their families.
