Mineola, NY – John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital, is pleased to announce the honorees for the Hospital’s Annual Gala, “Bella Luna,” a spectacular evening that will take place under the backdrop of a full moon and starlit sky on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Upper Brookville resident Michael E. Khalife, MD, Attending Surgeon at Winthrop and Partner of Nassau Surgical Associates, PC, and Garden City resident Charles L. Ruoff, CPCU, President of CR Market Strategies, Inc. and member of Winthrop’s Board of Directors, will each receive the Streaming Star Award in recognition of their years of devoted service to Winthrop-University Hospital and its patients.

“Dr. Khalife and Mr. Ruoff exemplify excellence in their professions and demonstrate through their actions a continuing commitment to our community and our institution. Their longstanding support and dedication to Winthrop makes them most deserving of this year’s Streaming Star Award,” said Mr. Collins.

Dr. Michael E. Khalife, a renowned surgeon specializing in laparoscopic surgery, breast surgery, and minimally invasive techniques, has been an esteemed member of Winthrop-University Hospital’s medical staff since 1984. Early in his career, Dr. Khalife traveled to France to study laparoscopic surgery – a technique that was then in its infancy. An early proponent of laparoscopic surgical procedures, Dr. Khalife trained numerous doctors and residents at Winthrop to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomies, hernia repairs, appendectomies, bowel resections and splenectomies.

Committed to excellence in education and fostering the active learning of medical students and residents, Dr. Khalife is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. What’s more, Dr. Khalife was recently named to the 2010 Castle Connolly “Guide to New York Top Doctors,” a prestigious designation that involves an extensive survey process, beginning with peer nominations.

Charles L. Ruoff, CPCU, a long-time supporter of Winthrop, has been involved in insurance underwriting, international insurance brokerage and alternative risk management businesses for over 40 years. In 2003, Mr. Ruoff formed his own consulting company, CR Market Strategies Inc., an insurance marketing and risk management consulting organization based in Garden City, New York.

Mr. Ruoff has offered tireless service to Winthrop’s Board of Directors for more than a decade and is actively involved with the Hospital’s Executive, Finance, Audit, Medical Education and Research, Insurance and Information Technology Committees. He serves on the Advisory Board of St. John’s School of Risk Management and Actuarial Science and on the Board of Trustees for the Lifesaving Institute of New York. He is also a past Chairman of the Board of the Winthrop South Nassau University Health System.

A highly regarded member of the business community, Mr. Ruoff has been a guest speaker at numerous industry events, and has had articles published in many of the industry’s leading publications. Mr. Ruoff is also a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Professional Liability Underwriters Association and the Society of CPU, New York Chapter.

The committee overseeing this year’s Gala is co-chaired by David K. Halpern, MD, of Nassau Surgical Associates, PC, and John H. Treiber, Vice Chairman of Winthrop’s Board of Directors and President of the Treiber Group, Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services in Garden City.

This year, Winthrop’s Gala will benefit the Hospital’s new Research Institute Building Fund and the Research Endowment. Guests will enjoy cocktails and fine dining, elegant music and dancing under the stars with special entertainers who will provide a most memorable performance.
