WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL ANNOUNCES HONOREES FOR 2009 GALA

Mineola, NY – John F. Collins, President and CEO of Winthrop-University Hospital, is pleased to announce the honorees for the Hospital’s Annual Gala, which will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the RexCorp Plaza in Uniondale. Muttontown resident Patrick K. Long, President and CEO of Formed Plastics, Inc., and the immediate past Chairman of Winthrop’s Board of Directors, and Roslyn resident Virginia M. Donovan, MD, Chair of the Hospital’s Department of Pathology, will each receive the Streaming Star Award in recognition of their years of devoted service to Winthrop-University Hospital and its patients.“Each year the Gala brings together many dedicated volunteers, benefactors and corporate partners, whose investment in Winthrop represents a commitment to compassionate care, state-of-the-science technology, cutting-edge research and excellence in medical education,” said Mr. Collins. “It is an honor to recognize Patrick Long and Dr. Virginia Donovan for their long-standing support and commitment to our world-class institution and to share this special evening with their family, friends and colleagues.” As president of Formed Plastics, Inc., Patrick K. Long is a pioneer in the field of rotational molding of plastics. Since 1976, Mr. Long has played an active role in the leadership of the Association of Rotational Molders (ARM) International – the premier organization of the rotational molding industry worldwide – and has shared his expertise at seminars all over the world. In 1998, Mr. Long was inducted into the Rotational Molding Hall of Fame – the highest honor bestowed on an individual by his peers for exemplary dedication and service to the industry. Mr. Long is a highly regarded member of the business community who served as Chairman of Winthrop’s Board of Directors from 2003 until 2006. He has been a member of the Hospital’s Board for 23 years, and serves on Winthrop’s Executive, Finance and Quality Improvement Committees, as well as the Annual Golf Tournament Committee. Active also in the community, Mr. Long is currently Chairman of the Joint Planning Committee of the Long Island Health Network. He has also served on the Alumni Board of Directors at Chaminade High School and is a Trustee at St. Edward’s Parish in Syosset. Dr. Virginia Donovan joined Winthrop-University Hospital in 1986, and since then has shared her expertise with nearly all of the clinical departments of the Hospital. Dr. Donovan is a highly regarded specialist in Hematopathology and Clinical Pathology and respected leader of Winthrop’s Department of Pathology. Committed to excellence in education and fostering the active learning of residents, Dr. Donovan has served as the Program Director of the Hospital’s Pathology Residency Program for more than a decade. She is also an Associate Professor of Clinical Pathology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and the Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. In addition to serving as Vice-Chair of the Hospital’s Institutional Review Board, Dr. Donovan is an active member of several Hospital Committees including the Infection Control Committee. During the course of her tenure at Winthrop, Dr. Donovan has been recognized on numerous occasions as the Department of Pathology’s Attending Physician of the Year – a testament to her commitment to excellence in the field. A Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, Dr. Donovan is a past President and Chair of the Nassau County Society of Pathologists. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Doctor of Medicine from John Hopkins University. She completed her residency in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at John Hopkins Hospital. The committee overseeing this year’s Gala, A Magical Evening, is co-chaired by Winthrop board member Eric Krasnoff, Chairman and CEO of the Pall Corporation, and Richard A. Rivera, MPH, MT, CLS, Director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Administrator at Winthrop. Winthrop-University Hospital’s annual Gala raises essential support for the Hospital and its world-class programs and services. The event also provides an opportunity to honor the individuals whose hard work and dedication to Winthrop go above and beyond in service to the community.
