Winthrop-University Hospital Fact Sheet
  • Founded as Nassau Hospital 1896 by concerned citizens, it is Long Island's first voluntary and oldest non-profit hospital in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
     
  • In 1985, the Hospital changed its name to honor one of its major benefactor Robert Winthrop.
     
  • The Hospital provides medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetrical services, and has a licensed capacity of 591 beds.
     
  • The Hospital has an operating certificate from the New York State Department of Health and is accredited by The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
     
  • Winthrop is a New York State Department of Health designated Regional Trauma Center.
     
  • Winthrop-University Hospital is a voluntary, not-for-profit institution created and maintained as a community service, and guided by a Board of Directors who volunteer their time, expertise and experience.
     
  • The Hospital employs approximately 6,000 individuals including nearly 1,500 nurses and more than 1,500 full-time and voluntary attending medical staff, including more than 150 full-time faculty members and Ph.D. medical researchers.
     
  • Winthrop's clinical programs are incorporated into seven "Institutes" to foster collaboration among its caregivers and a personalized approach to accessing healthcare:

  • Winthrop is the Primary Teaching Affiliate of Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Post-graduate training is offered through 21 approved Residencies and Fellowships in a wide range of disciplines.
     
  • Winthrop is a New York State Regional Perinatal Center (RPC), a prestigious designation that recognizes the Hospital's ability to deliver the highest level of obstetrical and perinatal care to patients throughout the region.
     
  • In 2008, Winthrop provided inpatient care for 35,015 men, women and children, chronicled over 4,500 deliveries and logged 59,055 emergency visits. In addition, more than 4,200 electrophysiology procedures and nearly 6,012 cardiac catherizations were performed. 18,000 surgical procedures were completed, including 517 open-heart operations. The Hospital's certified Home Health Agency and its Long Term Homecare Program provided more than 111,000 visits to community residents.
     
  • Winthrop is a New York State Department of Health designated Stroke Center.
     
  • The Bariatric Surgery Center at Winthrop-University Hospital has been designated a Center of Excellence by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC), the national non-profit organization that assesses and oversees bariatric surgery programs.
     
  • Winthrop-University Hospital is an active participant in the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines ProgramSM (GWTG). Winthrop’s Stroke Team and Coronary Artery Disease Program have both been recognized with Gold Awards through the GWTG program for continued high-quality care over a period of two consecutive years or more.
     
  • Winthrop’s Sleep Disorders Center, the first sleep medicine program in Nassau County to be accredited by the prestigious American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), is the longest, continually accredited sleep center on Long Island.
     
  • Winthrop-University Hospital is the first hospital in the New York Metropolitan area to offer CyberKnife(R) radiosurgery for the treatment of tumors and lesions that were once considered inoperable. With high-tech, cruise-missile-guidance technology and ultra-flexible, computer-controlled robotics, CyberKnife delivers precisely targeted radiation to tumors, taking treatment of benign and malignant masses to a new level.
