Winthrop-University Hospital Fact Sheet
  • Founded as Nassau Hospital 1896 by concerned citizens, it is Long Island's first voluntary and oldest non-profit hospital in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
     
  • In 1985, the Hospital changed its name to honor one of its major benefactors.
     
  • The Hospital provides medical, surgical, pediatric, and obstetrical services, and has a licensed capacity of 591 beds.
     
  • The Hospital has an operating certificate from the New York State Department of Health and is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
     
  • Winthrop is a Level 1 Regional Trauma Center.
     
  • Winthrop-University Hospital is a voluntary, not-for-profit institution created and maintained as a community service, and guided by a Board of Directors who volunteer their time, expertise and experience.
     
  • Effective March 27, 1996, Winthrop became affiliated with South Nassau Communities Hospital. The Hospital and SNCH formed a common parent corporation called Winthrop South Nassau University Health System, Inc.
     
  • The Hospital employs approximately 1,500 nurses and more than 1,500 full-time and voluntary attending medical staff, including more than 150 full-time faculty members and Ph.D. medical researchers.
     
  • In 1999, Winthrop clustered its clinical programs into seven "Institutes" to foster its personalized approach to accessing healthcare:

    The Institute for Heart Care
    The Institute for Lung Care
    The Institute for Digestive Disorders
    The Institute for Family Care
    The Institute for Neurosciences
    The Institute for Specialty Care
     
  • Winthrop is the Primary Teaching Affiliate of the SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine. Post-graduate training is offered through 21 approved Residencies and Fellowships in a wide range of disciplines.
     
  • Winthrop was recently named a New York State Regional Perinatal Center (RPC), a prestigious designation that recognizes the Hospital's ability to deliver the highest level of obstetrical and perinatal care to patients throughout the region.
     
  • In 2005, Winthrop provided inpatient care for more than 34,899 men, women and children, chronicled over 4,220 births and logged 49,300 emergency visits. In addition, more than 3,400 electrophysiology procedures and nearly 5,600 cardiac catherizations were performed. 19,153 surgical procedures were completed, including 528 open-heart operations. The Hospital's certified Home Health Agency and its Long Term Homecare Program provided more than 114,600 visits to community residents, and the Dialysis Center logged 59,335 treatments.
     
  • Winthrop is a New York State Department of Health designated Stroke Center.
