WINTHROP EXECUTIVE NAMED TO MODERN HEALTHCARE MAGAZINE’S TOP 25 CLINICAL INFORMATICISTS
Maureen Gaffney, RPAC, RN, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services and Chief Medical Information Officer at Winthrop-University Hospital, has been named one of the top 25 Clinical Informaticists of 2010 by Modern Healthcare magazine.
Modern Healthcare’s Top 25 Clinical Informaticists awards and honors program recognizes medical professionals who excel at using patient-care data to improve both the clinical and financial performance of their healthcare organizations. Ms. Gaffney was selected among dozens of nominees nationwide for demonstrating the successful use of patient-care data to improve Winthrop’s clinical and financial performance; a willingness to share expertise with others in the field of clinical informatics; and leadership in clinical informatics outside of the organization.
“I am truly honored to be recognized by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the nation’s top Clinical Informaticists,” said Ms. Gaffney. “This award is a testament to Winthrop’s commitment to being leaders in the use of health information technology to promote patient safety and quality care.”
Ms. Gaffney began her career at Winthrop in 1992 as a critical care nurse. She later became a physician assistant in cardiology and emergency medicine, and served six years as Director of Physician Assistant and Nurse Practitioner services. In 2006, Ms. Gaffney was named Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO).
As CMIO, Ms. Gaffney has facilitated hospital wide quality and patient safety initiatives through the use and implementation of health information technology including computerized provider order entry (CPOE) that led Winthrop to receive the 2009 American Hospital Association (AHA) Pursuit of Excellence Award and the 2009 HANYS Pinnacle Award for Quality and Safety. Ms. Gaffney was named Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services in 2010.
Ms. Gaffney earned a Master of Health Science degree from Drexel University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physician Assistant Studies from Stony Brook University. A fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), Ms. Gaffney is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). She serves as the Treasurer of the Executive Board of the eHealth Network of Long Island Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) and is a member of the organization’s Clinical, Quality and Evaluation Committee.
Ms. Gaffney and her husband Bill have four children. They reside in Westbury, NY. # # #
