ROCKVILLE CENTRE LIONS CLUB SENDS WINTHROP KIDS TO CAMP
Mineola, NY - Thanks to a generous $600 donation from the Rockville Centre Lions Club, two members of the Kids Interested in Diabetes (KIDs) Program at Winthrop-University Hospital, Leisa Rockelein of Syosset and Madison Savarese of West Hempstead, have the opportunity to attend the Clara Barton Diabetes Day Camp in Roslyn this summer.
As members of the KIDs Program, Leisa and Madison participate in a unique education and support group for children with type 1 diabetes offered by Winthrop’s nationally recognized Diabetes Education Center. The scholarship given by the Rockville Centre Lions Club is intended to help enable children with diabetes attend the Clara Barton Diabetes Day Camp – a special camp geared specifically toward insulin-dependent children. This outdoor summer camp combines fun and activity with diabetes education in a relaxed environment that is designed to support and inspire children with diabetes.
“The Lions Club International has a tradition of supporting efforts that help prevent and treat diabetes and its potential side effects,” said Eileen Egan, FNP, CDE, Coordinator of Winthrop’s Kindred Spirits Support Group for families of children with diabetes. “Together, with the Clara Barton Day Camp and the Lions Club, Winthrop is dedicated to educating children about diabetes in an effort to decrease the possibility of complications.”
