Mineola, NY – Winthrop-University Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Ed Chewens to the position of Assistant Vice President, Women’s and Children’s Services.

An integral part of the Hospital’s leadership team for six years, Mr. Chewens most recently served as the Administrative Director of the Children’s Medical Center at Winthrop where he was responsible for the administration, program development and financial oversight of the Center. His vast accomplishments in this role included combining several remote pediatric practice sites into one comprehensive multi-specialty pediatric practice at Winthrop. Working with members of Winthrop’s senior administration, Mr. Chewens also played an integral role in the design and launch of a physician referral development program. Additionally, he was instrumental in facilitating the Hospital’s membership in the prestigious National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI level 1A) and designation by the Hospital’s Board of Directors as a Children’s Medical Center.

A member of the Medical Group Management Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association, Mr. Chewens is also actively involved in the community. He serves on various boards and committees including Family Promise of Nassau County and the College of Professional Services Advisory Board at St. John’s University, and is a guest lecturer and mentor to students at several local universities. Mr. Chewens is also the past President of the Holy Name Society for Mary’s Nativity Church in Flushing and the past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Olympia Council #394.

Prior to joining Winthrop, Mr. Chewens held senior administrative positions at major New York Medical Centers including serving as the Clinical Practice Administrator for the Women’s Health Center at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and as the Clinical Practice Administrator for the Department of Pediatrics at Cornell University Medical College.

Mr. Chewens earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Management from St. John’s University and his Master of Business Administration in Hospital and Healthcare Finance from Adelphi University. He resides in Flushing, NY, with his wife Susan and their three children.
