WINTHROP-UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL CELEBRATES OPENING OF NEW SLEEP DISORDERS CENTER

Mineola, NY - Members of the local community, Winthrop-University Hospital’s senior administration, board of directors and staff gathered on May 13, 2010 to celebrate the opening of the new Winthrop Sleep Disorders Center (SDC) in the Winthrop Wellness Pavilion, located at 1300 Franklin Avenue in Garden City.

Among the highlights of the new, state-of-the-art facility are eight tranquil “hotel-style” accommodations – each equipped with a private, handicapped-accessible bathroom and shower; flat-screen television with cable TV and DVD player; and individually controlled heat and air conditioning. The SDC also boasts pediatric-friendly accommodations and a shared lounge, including a kitchenette with refreshments and daily newspapers, for patients and families.

A nationally accredited program with more than 20 years of experience in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders, Winthrop’s SDC is a recognized leader and pacesetter in the practice of Sleep Medicine. The Center’s highly trained and experienced staff includes physicians Board Certified in Sleep Medicine and registered polysomnographic technologists, who are proficient in evaluating and diagnosing a range of sleep difficulties. The team designs personalized treatment programs to manage a broad spectrum of sleep disorders in adults and children including obstructive sleep apnea; excessive daytime sleepiness; snoring; insomnia; restless legs syndrome; narcolepsy; shift work sleep disorder; and various other conditions.

“Winthrop’s Sleep Disorders Center has continuously been accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1990 and takes great pride in providing outstanding patient care,” said Michael Weinstein, MD, FAASM, Director of Winthrop’s Sleep Disorder Center. “We are excited to celebrate the opening of our new facility, which sets a new standard for sleep centers and is superbly equipped to treat the growing number of people suffering with sleep disorders.”

Winthrop’s SDC conducts sleep studies at all hours to accommodate patients’ usual sleep schedules and offers a support group for patients with sleep apnea. The group is open to all patients with sleep problems, not only those being treated at Winthrop. In addition, Winthrop’s SDC is one of a select few in the nation to offer a fellowship training program for physicians in Sleep Medicine and conducts clinical trials of new treatments for sleep disorders including insomnia, restless legs syndrome and narcolepsy.
