WINTHROP’S NINTH ANNUAL SWIM-A-THON RAISES OVER $15,000 FOR CHILD LIFE PROGRAM
Mineola, NY – Swimmers of all ages and abilities came out to Hofstra University’s Swim Center on April 18, 2010 to enjoy a fun-filled morning of swimming and special activities at Winthrop-University Hospital’s Ninth Annual Swim-a-thon. With nearly 200 people in attendance, the event was a great success, raising over $15,000 for Winthrop’s Child Life Program.
Participants enjoyed swim instructions from Total Immersion Swimming, music, raffles, crafts, massages, gifts and more. Proceeds from the event support Winthrop’s Child Life Program through which certified child life specialists utilize supervised play and education to improve patients’ understanding of medical procedures, teach relaxation techniques to help young patients cope with illness or surgery, and provide emotional support for the entire family.
“Every year, the enthusiasm for the Swimathon builds. We are grateful for the community’s support in making this event such a success; every lap goes a long way in supporting the unique services that Winthrop provides to thousands of sick children every year,” said Ron Marino, DO, MPH, Associate Chairman and Director of General Pediatrics at Winthrop, and organizer of the annual fundraiser.
